Her old house

The East Boston neighborhood of modest two-story homes was quiet, very quiet, on a recent picture-perfect August morning. Overhead, a few low-flying planes buzzed across the clear summer sky as they approached the runway at Logan airport just beyond the harbor a block away. The only clues as to which house on the street was the lucky recipient of a "This Old House" makeover was some blue scaffolding criss-crossing the home's exterior and a large white truck parked in the driveway with a contractor's name that would make any fan of the show green with envy — Silva Brothers Construction. For the granddaddy of all television home improvement shows, its 28th season is opening with a renovation that's a little different from the norm, say the show's producers. For starters, the selection process was opened to homeowner submissions. read more.

Lula may face second round run-off: Polls

SAO PAULO: Stacks of dirty money nabbed in a botched smear campaign covered Brazil's front pages on Saturday as polls showed for the first time that president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva could be forced to a second round run-off. Two polls released on Saturday night, the last before Sunday's first round vote, showed that Lula's total share of the valid vote continues to dwindle and his closest rival opposition candidate Geraldo Alckmin is closing ground fast. His slide in the polls coincides with the "dossier" scandal that has been gaining momentum in the media over the past two weeks, the latest of a series of scandals that have dogged Lula and his Workers' Party over past two years roughly. The Ibope poll showed Lula with 45% of the vote, down from 48% on Wednesday, and Alckmin with 34% up from 32%. read more.

Experience original art at Fall Craft Fair

After more than a decade in the real estate business, Rebecca Anne Robertson said she concluded it was “quite an unfriendly world" and quit her job. A friend, as a gesture of support, gave Robertson a piece of fused glass crafted by a Guatemalan artist, and unknowingly charted Robertson's new path. “I said, ‘That's it. I can do that.' So I ordered thousands of dollars of equipment and printed business cards with the name Ancient Fires Glass Studio before I had ever taken a glass class," Robertson said. “I didn't choose it, it chose me." After a few intensive weekend art courses, Robertson was so wildly popular at her first juried art show she sold out of all her glass creations. That was motivation to continue, and for the last fifteen years she's traveled the country to exhibit and sell her work at top art shows when she's not working out of her Asheville, N.C., home. read more.

Brazil's Lula Forced to a Runoff in Reelection Bid

SAO PAULO, Brazil, Oct. 1 -- President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva won the first round of Brazil's presidential election Sunday, but fell short of earning enough votes to avoid a runoff later this month against the second-place challenger. With 99 percent of polling places accounted for, Lula received about 48.7 percent of the votes -- shy of the 50 percent needed to win reelection outright and avert an Oct. 29 runoff. The runner-up, former Sao Paulo state governor Geraldo Alckmin, received about 41.6 percent. . read more.

Brazilians in Silva's Town Still Loyal

SAO BERNARDO DE CAMPO, Brazil - Residents of this drab, industrial town where President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva rose to prominence as a labor leader remain loyal to him despite the scandals that have rocked his presidency. Silva, a one-time lathe operator who became Brazil's first leftist president, won nearly 69 percent of the votes in this town on the outskirts of Sao Paulo in 2002 - and he appears set to do it again in Oct. 1 elections. "I'm going to vote for Lula because he fought poverty and has favored the poor instead of the rich and upper classes," said Bruno da Silva Ferreira, an 18-year-old student. Ferreira and his friends are too young to remember Silva's days as a radical union organizer who spoke out against the country's 1964-85 military rule - even as they sit next to a church where he once sought haven from the truncheons of the dictatorship-era military police. read more. The more well-known vehicles for top quality research are quickly found.
